10 Little Tips and Tricks for Stardew Valley Beginners

Stardew Valley offers a massive world for you to explore. With so much flexibility comes a ton of freedom to play how you want. However, it can be hard to discover the most efficient methods of playing, and it certainly isn’t easy to find them in just one playthrough. So here’s ten little tips and tricks that can make your first few days in Pelican Town a little easier.

1. Chopping and mining rocks can be faster.

You can chop trees faster than just long pressing. If you can figure out the rhythm for clicking, it can actually turn out way faster than long pressing your mouse. The same applies when you’re mining ores and rocks in the mines.

2. Always check the fortune teller before you go mining.

Right click on the TV and choose your channel.

Before you go on your mining spree, always make sure to watch the fortune teller on the TV. She will tell you whether you mining trip will be easy or rough. Your luck while mining will be depending on the mood of the spirits.

3. Coal is underrated.

You may not think of coal as a valuable resource compared to other things such as iron and copper, but I suggest you save your coal. Because coal is used for various recipes including bombs, scarecrows, preserve jars, etc. It’s also a use for fuel. You should save you coal, also because there isn’t a way to farm it. It’s something you acquire as you progress in the game.

4. Upgrade your bag as soon as possible.

Early on in the game, you will probably find your bag space annoying. The first thing you should invest your money on is a new backpack. The first upgrade is fairly easy to grind for since it’s only 2,000 gold. It will give you a bunch of slots in your inventory which will be really efficient while you play.

5. Don’t throw out your mixed seeds.

The mixed seeds in my inventory.

Mixed seeds are seeds you slowly acquire from cutting off the bushes in your farm. Don’t throw these seeds out, because when planted they can be any seed available from the store. So it’s free crops.

6. Pick up the fruits and little things from the ground.

When you see a fruit or a plant from the ground, pick it up. It could make a good snack for your mining trips since food restores health and energy, or you can also choose to sell it at the store for a good price.

7. Worms on the ground.

If you see any weird wriggling things in the ground. Dig the spot up with your hoe. Those are worms, and that spot will contain materials (clay, stone, ore), artifacts or lost books.

8. Keep your hoe on you at all times.

As I explained above, little worms and strange things on the ground may appear. So it’s good to keep you hoe by your side in case you need to dig a few things up.

9. Fix the bridge by Elliot’s house.

You will spot a broken bridge at the beach beside Elliot’s house. Fix that bridge as early as you can in the game. This will allow you to access a new fishing spot, as well as giving you access to corals and sea urchins. It’s fairly easy to fix, given that it only needs 300 wood.

10. Water your plants daily.

Water your plants daily if you don’t have a sprinkler yet. It will boost the growth speed of your crops, as well as keeping your plants healthy since your crops can only survive six days without proper watering.
